The Punta Galea Challenge is the longest running big wave surfing competition in Europe that is held every year in the municipality of Getxo, in Bizkaia.
A town that enjoys ideal conditions for surfing all year round, four beaches and almost twenty waves, among which Punta Galea stands out, classified as excellent by experts for the most extreme surfing.The event celebrates its XV edition in 2021-2022.The test, counts for its celebration, with a waiting period of five months, from November 1 to March 31.
The competition is held for a single day in the middle of the tidal season, between autumn and winter.
During this period, each storm that approaches the Bay of Biscay is studied in detail, choosing the one that brings the best waves and the most favorable winds.
Its celebration is announced just 48 hours in advance.The test has been growing over the years and currently, thanks to the support of various sponsors, it has managed to increase the amount allocated to the prizes by 50%, reaching a total of €20,500.This spectacular sporting event has a complex deployment of security on land and sea, even in the air.
The cliff, an ideal natural amphitheater, is where the public, some 20,000 people, enjoy waves around 6 meters high for just 4 hours that the competition lasts.It is a very mediatic event to which a hundred media are accredited each year.
